The Magnetized Plasma Research Laboratory (MPRL) provides several pathways to establish collaborations with us. There are currently three methods to obtain support to perform studies at the MPRL. In all cases, potential users should contact MPRL personnel to discuss how to prepare a successful proposal.
Method 1: Participating in the Strategic Plasma Innovation Network (SPI-NET)
The SPI-NET collaboration, supported by the National Science Foundation and coordinated through the MPRL, provides external users with travel and logistical support to contact studies at the MPRL and, in the future, at member institutions in the network. We are preparing to accept short white paper proposals for experimental run time for the period Summer, 2026 through Spring, 2027. Visit the SPI-NET page for additional information and a link to the submission portal.
Method 2: Participating in the “Call for Runtime Proposals” through MagNetUS
For the last several years, the MPRL has been one of the laboratories that have participated in the MagNetUS call for runtime proposals. This is an opportunity to perform using the Basic Plasma Science Facility (University of California Los Angeles), Wisconsin Plasma Physics Laboratory (University of Wisconsin – Madison), Magnetized Plasma Research Laboratory (Auburn University), DIII-D National Fusion Facility (General Atomics), and the PHASMA device at The Center for KINETIC Plasma Physics (West Virginia University). The joint call is a service designed to gather peer-review feedback on proposals for collaborative research on participating magnetized plasma facilities. It is run by representatives from the above research facilities, who cycle out on a 2-year basis.
Method 3: Joint proposals with the MPRL
The MPRL welcomes opportunities to partner with and support research proposals that are prepared for a variety of funding agencies. We have provided options ranging from offering support letters to PIs to serving as co-PIs on proposals. Reach out to the MPRL team to discuss options.
